Dr. Al Lightstone
Ph.D., P.Eng., Principal Engineer, President
Dr. Lightstone, a designated Consulting Acoustical Engineer, has been active in the field of acoustics for more than 40 years. Al is a member of good standing of the PEO, Canadian Acoustical Association, Acoustical Society of America, and lifetime member of IEEE.
As President of Valcoustics Canada Ltd., he is regularly involved in the acoustical design of buildings of all types including educational institutions, broadcast facilities, civic centres, studios, theatres and entertainment venues, courthouses, residential uses, hotels, office and industrial, providing expertise relating to environmental acoustics, architectural acoustics, noise and vibration control, sound isolation and sound masking design. Dr. Lightstone has gained considerable expertise with respect to community noise studies, transportation projects, residential, commercial and industrial development, as well as a variety of special noise/vibration projects.
He was the examiner in acoustics for the Royal Architectural Institute until 2012. He has been involved in the formulation of noise by-laws, has published numerous technical papers on noise and vibration, and has participated several times as an invited lecturer at the MOE course on Acoustics Technology in Land Use Planning and has been a member of several MOE technical committees dealing with environmental noise analysis, procedures, and formulation of guidelines (e.g., the ORNAMENT model). As an expert witness in acoustics he has appeared over 100 times before the Federal Court, Supreme Courts of Ontario and British Columbia, the Ontario Municipal Board, the Ontario Environmental Assessment Board, as well as other tribunals. Dr. Lightstone has also been guest lecturer in noise control to fourth year architectural students at the University of Waterloo.
Numerous assignments on major environmental and architectural acoustics projects for both the public and private sectors have been completed not only across North America but also internationally, including in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Central America and the Caribbean.
Guangsheng (Sam) Du
M.Sc., P.Eng., Senior Engineer
Mr. Du has been involved in a wide variety of environmental and architectural acoustic projects with over 20 years of acoustical engineering experience. Mr. Du has been involved with environmental noise and vibration impact studies for a variety of facilities such as industrial and commercial developments, institutional, major roadways, railways and residential development, as well as for approvals of green energy projects.
Mr. Du is an expert in state-of-the-art computerized acoustical modelling and is involved in acoustical modelling on a daily basis. He also regularly reviews architectural acoustics for major design projects, involving the interaction of sound and architectural elements to obtain the desired acoustic environment within a space.
Mr. Matthew has a diverse background in Acoustics, and has done extensive work in the area of Architectural Acoustics. Prior to joining the Valcoustics team, Mr Matthew completed his M.Sc. in Audio Acoustics at the University of Salford in Manchester England.
He has extensive experience in Room Acoustics analysis and modelling. He has managed the acoustical design requirements including acoustic measurements, room modelling, analyses and preparation of recommendations for acoustic treatment for a wide range of applications including worship spaces, condominiums, museums, and open offices.
Mr. Matthew also regularly manages projects in the areas of environmental noise and vibration, and is project manager for the Metrolinx Union Station to Pearson Air Rail Link construction monitoring project that includes over 50 remote-controlled noise and vibration monitors. Mr Matthew was an active contributor for NPC-300 (currently in draft form) as well as drafting a number of other noise guidelines, standards, and By-Laws.
B.Eng., P.Eng., Principal Engineer
Mr. Emeljanow has extensive experience in architectural acoustics and environmental noise and vibration impact studies for a variety of facilities such as residential developments, major roadways, pits, quarries, landfills, industries, institutional and commercial facilities.
He is a graduate of the MOE Acoustics Technology in Land Use Planning Course and has given evidence as an expert witness before the OMB many times, dealing with environmental acoustics issues in land use planning. His daily work requires an understanding and awareness of various policies and guidelines relating to land use approvals and land use compatibility. In his 25th year at Valcoustics, he is regularly involved as the project manager for major projects such as hospitals, schools, convention centres, courthouses, office buildings, casinos, etc.
Mr. Levkoe has had extensive experience in all facets of architectural acoustics and environmental noise and vibration assessment projects. He has acted as project manager for a variety of major noise and vibration building design projects as well as acoustic design and environmental noise and vibration impact assessments and has extensive knowledge on the requirements and procedures for obtaining Environmental Compliance Approvals (formerly known as Certificates of Approval) from the Ministry of Environment for industrial facilities.
He has also prepared and presented a variety of seminars on architectural and environmental acoustics to private bodies here in the GTA.
B.Sc., MBA, Business Development
Prior to joining Valcoustics Canada Ltd., Michael worked at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Chicago Board of Options and the Chicago Board of Trade. Since Joining Valcoustics full time in 2005, he has been responsible for project management, business development, proposals, financial management and human resources.

Mr. Harding has extensive experience in architectural acoustics and environmental noise and vibration impact studies for a variety of facilities such as residential developments, commercial developments, institutions and industrial facilities. With over 25 years’ experience, he has acted as project manager for a variety of major noise and vibration building design projects as well as acoustic design and environmental noise and vibration impact studies.
Mr. Harding is a is a graduate of the MOE Acoustics Technology in Land Use Planning Course. He has given evidence as an expert witness before the OMB, dealing with environmental acoustics issues in land use planning. His experience also includes preparation of noise studies for Environmental Compliance Approval applications and Acoustic Audits for various types of facilities.
