Dr. Lightstone, a designated Consulting Acoustical Engineer, has been active in the field of acoustics for more than 40 years. Al is a member of good standing of the PEO, Canadian Acoustical Association, Acoustical Society of America, and lifetime member of IEEE.
As President of Valcoustics Canada Ltd., he is regularly involved in the acoustical design of buildings of all types including educational institutions, broadcast facilities, civic centres, studios, theatres and entertainment venues, courthouses, residential uses, hotels, office and industrial, providing expertise relating to environmental acoustics, architectural acoustics, noise and vibration control, sound isolation and sound masking design. Dr. Lightstone has gained considerable expertise with respect to community noise studies, transportation projects, residential, commercial and industrial development, as well as a variety of special noise/vibration projects.
He was the examiner in acoustics for the Royal Architectural Institute until 2012. He has been involved in the formulation of noise by-laws, has published numerous technical papers on noise and vibration, and has participated several times as an invited lecturer at the MOE course on Acoustics Technology in Land Use Planning and has been a member of several MOE technical committees dealing with environmental noise analysis, procedures, and formulation of guidelines (e.g., the ORNAMENT model). As an expert witness in acoustics he has appeared over 100 times before the Federal Court, Supreme Courts of Ontario and British Columbia, the Ontario Municipal Board, the Ontario Environmental Assessment Board, as well as other tribunals. Dr. Lightstone has also been guest lecturer in noise control to fourth year architectural students at the University of Waterloo.
Numerous assignments on major environmental and architectural acoustics projects for both the public and private sectors have been completed not only across North America but also internationally, including in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Central America and the Caribbean.
